Hello everyone ...
I first began exploring the Body, Mind & Spirit realm back in 1985 through my role as workshop producer and promoter for metaphysical author Stuart Wilde. This was certainly a very different world from my past careers in the media and business, but it held an allure that beckoned me to explore a little further.
It was the very persistent Mr. Wilde who kept saying "Demps, why don't you open a distribution company and sell my books up in Canada?" I was uncertain as to what the scope of such a venture would be, but I liked the idea of disseminating teachings such as these, and as far as I could see, no one else was providing this kind of specialty distribution in Canada.
By February 1988, Dempsey & Associates was born in my bachelor apartment in the West End of Vancouver, with two authors under its belt ... Stuart Wilde and Louise Hay. Between them, they offered up about a dozen products for me to distribute. It was a humble beginning, but it didn't stay that way for very long. In April of that same year, Louise Hay's book "You Can Heal Your Life" hit the New York Times bestseller list, and as the sole distributor for Hay House in Canada, I took on a role that is best mimicked in the episode of I Love Lucy, where Lucy takes a job on the assembly line in a chocolate factory.
I would spend my days out visiting stores and telling people about my new business and come home to find an increasing number of orders on the answering machine. Having copied down the orders and written up an invoice, I would get out my packing table (ironing board) and assemble the goods for shipping. The final step was carrying them across the street to the little postal outlet and buying enough stamps to send them on their way. The phrase, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger", came to mind at this point.
The intervening years have been ones of tremendous growth and change and we are very proud of the Dempsey Distributing you see today. Our warehouse and office space in Burnaby is home to more than 15,000 items: books, CDs, calendars, inspiration and tarot decks, journals and specialty gifts. We ship products from over 200 North American suppliers to customers throughout Canada, the United States and overseas.
